About Jewish Reels

Jewish Reels is a blog dedicated to historical footage of Orthodox Jewish life โ€” the newsreels, travel films, home movies, and archive discoveries that captured communities, customs, and moments most people never knew were on film.

Old film has a way of preserving what no one thought to write down: the rhythm of a market before Shabbos, the inside of a synagogue that no longer stands, faces going about ordinary days that history would soon make extraordinary. As archives around the world digitize their vaults, more of these reels surface every year.

Each post pairs a piece of footage with the story behind it โ€” where it was filmed, how it was found, and the details worth pausing on. The goal is simple: to watch closely, explain carefully, and give these moments the attention they deserve.

Have a reel we should see, or history about footage featured here? We'd love to hear from you.
